About Us

It was in the year 1900…

at the turn of the century, that Nathaniel Harrison Simmonds, son of Nathaniel Simmonds - bookseller, map and print specialist in High Street, Salisbury, was born into the world at Mitre House under the shadow of the spire of that great and sumptuous Cathedral which boasts the highest spire in England.

Following his father's sudden death in 1906, he was fortunate to have been 'adopted' by his uncle and aunt Ernest and Emily Harrison.

In 1928, Ernest poor in health and modest in wealth, joined in partnership with his nephew to purchase the business of Covingtons Tobacco Specialists established in the 19th Century in the High Street of the busy market town of Bedford linked to London by a 50 mile journey on the Midland railway.

Ernest supplied the funds, leaving Nathaniel to enjoy the freedom of developing the business as he saw fit. Both partners, having had many years experience in the Jewellery Trade, naturally had an eye for quality and prestige and Nathaniel set about building a warm, happy and intimate relationship with customers, laying the foundations of what still is today a truly family business in which two of his sons, Michael and David and three of his grandchildren, Matthew, Dominic and Christiane are deeply involved.

David and Liliane Simmonds and brother in law John Maund joined the partnership in the early 70's and friend Richard Zdziarski joined the management in 1985 with the opening of the shop at Cambridge just opposite St Johns College Chapel.

In recent decades, Harrison & Simmonds has developed into a gentleman's emporium with a range of accoutrements mainly for men far too vast and varied to display on a modest web site.

However, some of the ranges of quality goods available are now on screen which we hope will give you surfing pleasure and also whet your appetite.
