The Mitsubishi A6M3 "Zero" was a refined version of Japan's legendary carrier-based fighter, designed to address speed and altitude performance during the middle stages of World War II. The A6M3 introduced several notable changes from the earlier A6M2, primarily centered around the more powerful Nakajima Sakae 21 engine (approx. 1,130 hp) and a two-stage supercharger.
Initially, the Zero was the most capable carrier fighter in the world, boasting a 12 to 1 kill ratio early in the war. However, its lightweight construction meant it lacked pilot armour and self-sealing fuel tanks, making it highly vulnerable to Allied firepower. By 1943, newer Allied aircraft like the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair exploited these weaknesses, ending the Zero's dominance.
